Milford, DE- December 6, 2018 -  The Boys and Girls Club of Delaware is proud to announce their honoree for the 2019 Great Futures Award, Fred Hertrich IV of the Hertrich Family of Automobile Dealerships.  The award will be presented at the 5th Annual Masquerade Ball on March 9, 2019.

The Great Futures Award is presented annually to an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the community. This individual must exemplify the highest ideals of organizational stewardship. Their positive influence must consistently meet the community’s needs and enhance the quality of life for Delawareans. This individual must serve as a role model and standard-bearer within the community, inspiring others toward community service and responsiveness.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware is thrilled to honor Fred for his many years of dedication to our clubs and kids. His commitment to supporting our events and programs, as well as to giving and service, makes Fred the ideal recipient for this award,” said John Wellons, president and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. “There are many things that Boys & Girls Clubs do, but most people don’t understand the depth of our thinking and offerings. Fred does, and he always has.”

Fred Hertrich IV and the Hertrich Family as a whole have been proud sponsors of the Delaware Boys and Girls Club for over two decades.  Their contributions have spanned 3 generations of the Hertrich family, the entire state of Delaware and over 20 years, dating back to at least 1996. The Hertrichs were instrumental in building both the Sussex and Milford clubs, often contribute to general operating funds, have funded sports leagues, continually donate towards scholarships, have been major sponsors of countless special events, and have sponsored the Masquerade Ball since its inception. As the Hertrich Family has grown throughout the years, so has their support of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware. Fred Hertrich IV has personally been involved in several of these projects with some of the most recent including sponsoring the New Castle Basketball League, being a 1931 Club Sponsor of the Masquerade Ball, helping to fund countless scholarships, and leading a significant capital campaign for the Milford Boys and Girls club.  Fred Hertrich IV and his team have also coordinated and sponsored one of the largest annual Boys and Girls club field trips in the state beginning in 2017, taking 600 kids and 100 chaperones to the Delaware State Fair, providing transportation, lunch, admission, t-shirts and planning and leading a packed itinerary full of educational experiences that for many kids is their first experience at the fair.

“I believe in the Boys and Girls Club and I believe in what they do for youth,” Hertrich says.  “I am very passionate about helping the kids in our community, about providing them with opportunities they may not otherwise have, and about investing in their futures. That is what the Boys and Girls club is all about, helping the kids that need it the most. There is a Boys and Girls Club in every community we serve in Delaware so I think it has always been a natural fit to align ourselves with them and help them in any way that we can.”

Aside from being heavily involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs all across the state, Fred Hertrich IV is also heavily involved with other community organizations as well, something we look for in a recipient of our Great Futures Award. In 2018 alone, Hertrich filled eight trucks with snack items for USO Delaware, provided six Maryland County Teacher of the Year honorees with the use of a new vehicle for the year, launched the Hertrich Cash for Class project where educators could submit a video saying what their classroom or school needs funds for, made significant investments in local hospitals to improve infrastructure and help fund nursing schools, sponsored copious classrooms, provided jerseys for many teams, walked in many 5Ks, sponsored autism events and gave to local fire departments, as well as countless other organizations.  At the end of 2017, Hertrich even helped the Salisbury Zoo to bring a rescued Andean Bear named Pinocchio from Ecuador to Salisbury.  In fact, largely in part to his significant contributions to the community, Fred Hertrich IV is one of 51 nominees for the 2019 Time Dealer of the Year Award, a program that honors new-car dealers in America who exhibit exceptional performance in their dealerships and perform distinguished community service.

“It is important to me that our organization is a pillar of the community,” Hertrich says. “That is why we do what we do, so we can give back and support the impactful individuals around us.  I am incredibly humbled and grateful to be selected as the recipient of the Delaware Boys and Girls Club Great Futures award, but even more, I am proud of the impact we have been able to have on the lives of the children in our community by working with this incredible organization.”
